Women share tips about our bodies. What we do behind closed doors can be a mystery. Let’s face it, not all of us were lucky enough to have moms, older sisters, aunts or friends to teach us what to do.
I remember struggling to try to use a tampon in the stall of a public bathroom at a water park at age 14. My friend, Dana, was trying to explain how to do it through the bathroom door and I was completely clueless about my body and what went where. The end of the story is I didn’t get to ride the huge water slide at Six Flags Atlantis on that bright sunny day in Hollywood, Florida circa 1983. Fast forward 30 years and I am fortunate to have a daughter who is so open and comfortable with her body that she actually stood at the bottom of the stairs in our home and exclaimed, “Can you get me a tampon? I have blood coming out of my vagina.”
Yes, women have come a long way from hiding a tampon in our hand as we sneak into the bathroom to young women of today who unabashedly carry condoms in their handbags. Some of us may still have some catching up to do.
Let’s continue the conversation and ask the questions we need to know but may be too embarrassed to ask.
