Favorite Casual Eats in Manhattan – October 2017

I love to cook and try to eat at home as much as possible – in order to save on calories and cash.  However, living in NYC makes it so fun to go out and explore different yummy treats.  Here are a few of my favorite simple eats.

Where to go

Momofuku Milk Bar – multiple locations

What to eat

Cereal Milk™ soft serve with Cereal Crunch topping

It is made with milk, cornflakes, brown sugar and a pinch of salt, it tastes just like the milk at the bottom of a bowl of cornflakes!

Where to go

Patsy’s Pizzeria – multiple locations

What to eat

Pizza, of course.  We have been trying a new pizza restaurant once a week and so far Patsy’s is a favorite.

Juniors – Times Square

What to eat

Start with Matzoh Ball Soup & Turkey Sandwich on Rye with Russian dressing on the side.

Of course, you have to order cheesecake for dessert.  Don’t feel guilty as you are definitely walking more than usual if you are visiting NYC.

Where to go

Izakaya Ida – Upper West Side

What to eat

Tonkoysu Miso Ramen – pork broth miso ramen topped with chashu pork, soft boiled egg, bamboo shoots, scallions, wood ear mushrooms, pink ginger and sweet corn.

Where to go

Le Pain Quotidien – multiple locations

What to eat

Coffee and light snacks or brunch items

Organic Greek Yogurt with Honey & Pistachios and Fresh Berries is a wonderful breakfast treat.

If you have time to eat in, definitely do that in order to enjoy the wonderful coffee mugs.  Even the best coffee tastes better when you get to enjoy it in a ceramic mug clasped between your hands.

Where to go

Mary’s Fish Camp – West Village

What to eat

Pan Fried ‘Hook and Line’ Atlantic Cod Sandwich with French Fries

(and sit at the counter if possible as it makes it just a bit more fun)

Where to go

Mamoun’s Falafel – multiple locations

What to eat

Any of the vegetarian sandwiches are a great choice.  I don’t know where else in NYC you can get a meal for only $3.50.  I love the Baba Ganouj ( smoked eggplant spread w/ parsley, garlic & tahini) in a pita with lettuce and tomatoes.  Remember to ask for a fork because it gets very messy.  Visit the Macdougal location in the village and then you can take it with you and sit on a bench in Washington Square park and really enjoy the culture of the Village.

Please share your favorites in the comments.  Feel free to include restaurants in your favorite city and not just NYC.
